Vincent Hundley, MS, CSP, STS | President & CEO

Vince Hundley

Vince Hundley, MS, CSP, STS. Vince is the President and CEO of SMART Safety Group, a full service safety company providing safety products, safety services and OSHA training to thousands of employees in the construction industry. Vince also serves as the Safety Director of the AGC of San Diego, where he oversees all safety training staff, curriculum development and regulatory affairs.

Vince has 20 years of comprehensive safety experience and management experience working for a diverse group of employers. He has developed his own brand of Behavioral Safety Management that permeates organizations helping create safety cultures. His belief is that it is important that workers adopt safety not because it is required, but because they are doing it for their co-workers, family and community. Vince also creates curriculum and provides training on a wide range of safety topics.

He is a part of a select few trainers, nationwide that trains the trainers at the OSHA Training Institute. He trains them on how to deliver the OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 classes. Vince holds a BS in Occupational Safety from Illinois State University and a Master’s of Science in Industrial Hygiene from SDSU as well as being a Certified Safety Professional (CSP).

Akbarh Arreola, AS, ASP, QSP | Safety Consultant

Akbarh Arreola
Akbarh Arreola, AS, ASP, QSP, has over four years of professional experience in environmental safety and health. Akbarh is designated as an Associate Safety Professional through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and is currently pursuing his CSP designation. He also holds an Associates of Science in Environmental Health & Safety and has enthusiastically pursued outside training to increase his knowledge on a consistent basis.

Akbarh has worked in construction environments performing and directing the work of safety auditors, training, reporting, testing, inspecting and investigating. He has successfully supervised and trained hundreds of employees in safety procedures and is very well regarded from subordinates and management alike. Akbarh is a dedicated safety professional and always goes above and beyond the call of duty to keep the workers he oversees safe and educated on safety practices.

Andrew Ovadya, MS, ASP | Staffing Director & Safety Consultant

Andrew Ovadya

Andrew Ovadya, MS, ASP, is the Staffing Director and a Safety Consultant with SMART Safety Group and has been in the Environmental Health and Safety field for the past 24 years.

Andrew provides written safety plans, employee training, tracking and managing of worker compensation claims. Andrew has performed extensive industrial hygiene duties such as personal air sampling, area air sampling, indoor air quality surveys, personal area noise dosimetry sampling, lighting surveys and ergonomic evaluations.

In 1992 Andrew earned a B.S. in Environmental Health from San Diego State University and also completed his M.S. in Industrial Hygiene from SDSU in 2003. He is an authorized OSHA 30 and OSHA 10 construction safety trainer. He has received his Associate Safety Professional (ASP) Status and is on his way to becoming Certified Safety professional (CSP).

Carolyn Moon | Customer Service Manager

Carolyn Moon
Carolyn Moon is the Customer Service Manager handling the inside sales for SMART Safety Group. Carolyn has more than 25 years of marketing experience and joined SMART in 2010. She held a similar position at Safety Supply South in South Carolina where her primary responsibilities included supporting the safety equipment and PPE needs for several wind energy companies, including Granite Services (GE) and Suzlon Group.

Carolyn has represented numerous firms including General Dynamics, Hewlett Packard and the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau during her previous tenure as Account Supervisor / Media Director for two prominent Advertising /Marketing firms.

Carolyn holds a BS in Marketing from the University of Colorado.

Erick Eigenhuis | Safety Consultant

Erick Eigenhuis
Erick is a Safety Consultant and Lead Fall Protection Installation expert. He has been with SMART Safety Group longer than any current team member (7 years).

Erick manages some of SMART Safety Group’s largest clients and has exceptional knowledge of electrical and mechanical safety.

Erick earned his BS in Outdoor Recreation from San Diego State University and is certified in several professional courses.



Jackson Dalton | Director of Training

Jackson Dalton
Jackson is the Director of Training for SMART Safety Group. His responsibilities include creating and presenting safety training programs. He is a authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer and Competent Person Fall Protection Trainer.

Jackson has over 4 years’ experience as a Competent Person Fall Protection Trainer specializing in the specification, sourcing, and installation of engineered fall protection systems for the Military, Oil and Gas Exploration, Wind Energy, Utility, Transportation, and Construction markets.

Jackson is a former Marine and holds a BA in Business Management from the University of Saint Thomas.

Jennifer Mattoon | Accountant

Jennifer Mattoon
Jennifer Mattoon is the Controller with SMART Safety Group. Jennifer has 19 years of accounting experience and has been working for SMART for the past five years.

Jennifer is a Seattle Washington native who relocated to San Diego six years ago. She graduated from Western Washington University and passed the Washington State CPA exam in 1995.

Her career path eventually led her to a Biotech Company in Seattle where she started as an accountant and was promoted several times over an eight year period to become accounting manager for that company.

Joe Meads | Safety Consultant / Site Safety Health Officer

Joe Mead
Joe Meads joins SMART Safety Group with 35 years of construction experience including residential, commercial, new construction, remodels, and seismic upgrades. His attention to detail, coaching style and commitment to safety make him an asset on any project.

Joe started his safety career while working in the Navy, where protocol and emphasis on safety were very prevalent in the culture. His training as a foremen for a framing and concrete contractor expanded his safety knowledge, especially the challenges of working safely at height. His responsibility grew substantially as he moved into a superintendent role. Managing foremen, safety and production on various jobs gave him the insight on how to build a safety culture.

Joe now manages/assists Grossmont School District for safety on their construction projects.

John “Bud” Zayak | Site Safety and Health Officer

Bud is a Site Safety and Health Officer with SMART Safety Group. He has 35+ years of experience in the construction and safety industry. Bud was formerly in the United States Navy and attended Palomar College Project Management and Concrete Education.

Bud started his career at Union Local 1506 Carpenters and continued on to work at such places as Southmost Construction as a Foreman, Mission Bay Construction as their General Superintendent/Superintendent, GWD Company as General Superintendent/Project Manager/Estimator, WR Chavez Construction as Vice President/ Project Manager/ General Superintendent, Consolidated Construction Consulting acting as Owner/Project Manager/Estimator, and MBR Contractors as Project Superintendent.

Laura Harap | Director of Marketing

Laura Harap
Laura Harap joined SMART Safety Group in 2011 as the Director of Marketing. With a BBA in Business Marketing and International Business from Iona College, she brings fresh, out-of-the-box thinking to the SMART Safety Group team to help drive growth.

Laura’s responsibilities include marketing material development both on and off-line, coordinating companywide communications with clients, vendors and trainees, as well as maintaining the company’s Social Media properties.

Prior to SMART Safety Group, Laura’s experience included marketing responsibilities for Sony Music Entertainment, FIJI Water, and DDO Artists Agency in NYC.

Luis Torres | Safety Engineer

Luis Torres
Luis has 10 years of construction management and field safety experience working on public and private construction projects. He was the SSHO at various projects throughout Camp Pendleton including mooring eye replacement at airfield, 4-12 kV conversion in Area 53 and replacement for Straub Construction SHHO’s on an as needed basis. Luis ensures that safety programs (Cal/OSHA, FED OSHA and EM 385-1-1 APP’s) are followed and that all employees operate within sound safety standards.

Luis has knowledge of Federal/OSHA, Cal/OSHA and Military safety regulations. His experience includes supervising crews, performing required safety inspections, and documenting as a field safety manager.

Luis has completed his dual safety certification from the OSHA Training Institute (UCSD) in construction and general industry. He is an authorized OSHA 30 and OSHA 10-hour trainer in construction and general industry.

Matt Stevenson | Safety Consultant & Claims Manager

Matt Stevenson
Matt Stevenson has completed over 350 Fall Protection and Project Pre-Plans for customers like Google Inc., Nike Headquarters and Stanford University. He is currently managing over forty client’s injury and illness Worker’s Compensation claims. His responsibilities include enforcing the safety and health program of the customer while onsite, supervising daily work and coordinating the schedule and safety plan on jobsites.

Matt also organizes and attends Safety Business Meetings with the client, conducts safety audits onsite as well as the office, and trains clients in areas of safety and health including First Aid/CPR, Fall Protection, Confined Space, Excavation, Forklift, Work Zone Flagging, Heat Illness & OSHA Record keeping.

Mike Trotter | Site Safety and Health Officer

Mike has extensive experience as a safety manager. Prior to joining SMART Safety Group, Mike was named the Safety Manager/Project Manager for Paul Hanson Equipment, Inc. He was the SSHO at Camp Pendleton, for 8” gas line placement along Basilone Rd. and Communication Electrical Maintenance Facility at Camp Pendleton.

Mike is currently managing site safety for the massive substation project, Suncrest Power Link.




Ron Kaufold | Site Safety and Health Officer

Ron Kaufold has 21+years of construction management and safety experience working on large public and private construction projects. Those projects include Los Angeles City sewer rehabilitation, Carlsbad power plant and Abbott Labs in Temecula, CA.

Ron has recently completed an armory at Twenty-nine Palms Marine Corps Base. He has knowledge of Federal and Military safety regulations and has had extensive contact with permanent onsite OSHA inspectors.

Ron has also recently completed an OSHA 30 Fed construction safety course. His leadership skills and knowledge of construction and its safety aspects, make him an asset as an Onsite Site Safety Officer.

Shea Kirkpatrick | Director of Business Development

Shea Kirkpatrick
Shea is the Director of Business Development at SMART Safety Group. She is responsible for building increasing client base in safely consulting, safety training and safety products and equipment.

Shea is an expert in technical safety equipment sales including Fall Protection and Confined Space. Shea holds a BS in Business Administration from Northern Arizona University.

Shea was the owner of Safety First Supply company from 1993-2000 with sales $2M+ annually when sold in 2000. She owned SKL Instrument Services from 2001–03, specializing is gas detection equipment sales and service. Previous positions in the construction industry include Wagner Construction, Arise Scaffolding & Equipment and Mathews Machinery, Volvo Equipment dealer.
